Liberal Democrat Leader in Herts County Council, Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst has hit out a County Council press release that claimed County Council tax would have gone up £650 or 34%.

In a stinging attack on the official press release he called it "Trump-like fake news."

"It simply isn't true. The County part of the Council Tax couldn't possibly have gone up by that much, as the council tax increases have been capped. The savings (or in many cases cuts) are largely due to the necessity forced on all councils by Government." said Cllr Giles-Medhurst.

"As everyone knows the county and borough tax increases have been capped by central government for many years. The only way to exceed that cap, which was 3% this year, is for the council to hold a people's referendum.

"The Conservatives have never proposed a higher tax bill or a referendum and even if they had, we are looking at an increase that would have meant the bill for this year would have been 34% higher! Who are they trying to kid?

"Putting out fake news like this does no one any good and is a total scare tactic, and I am disgusted that the Conservative administration's bloated public relations department is being used in this way.

"I am disappointed that such a political and misleading statement has been issued to support the Conservative administration and to pedal fake news. I have asked legal officers at the County to rule on its use."
