The Tory parliamentary candidate for Watford is trying to deflect the blame of the County Council run by his party for the last 10 years onto the Liberal Democrats. Liberal Democrats have campaigned tirelessly for more school places in Watford, Rickmansworth and St Albans for years. Now the Tories as part of their clean campaign for parliament are saying it is the fault of the Liberal Democrats.
This is not the case and the Tories are too scared to let a few facts get in the way of good political spin.
FACT - school provision is a county managed provision, the planning of school places is their responsibility
FACT - the County Council have admitted that they have not forecast the birth rate well
FACT - the County Council has been Tory run for 10 years
Chris White, Liberal Democrat Leader said: 'They even suggest it is somehow our fault because we didn't vote for their flawed and wasteful budget. The Liberal Democrats proposed an alternative budget, which included money for more school places, and voted for that. The Tories voted for their budget, and against ours.
'It is a great shame to let spin get in the way of the truth. The Tories have failed to provide school places for our children in various parts of the county. It is their responsibility and maybe they should stop trying to shirk that responsibility and stop blaming others -and get on with solving the problem. Our children need school places!'
Leader of Three Rivers District Council Ann Shaw added: 'It was the county council which closed our schools regardless of the local geography and in the face of strong local opposition. It was the county council which sold the sites for development and used the millions of pounds gained from these sales. And it was the county council which made no provision for the education of the children who would predictably be living in the new homes and would require school places.'
