Geoff Lawrence, the President of the Hemel Hempstead Liberal Democrats, has notched up fifty years of membership and active work for the community in the Liberal Party and then Liberal Democrats.
Geoff joined the Liberal Party in 1959 and is still active in Highfield after many years as the local postmaster in the Heights. He has served as a Dacorum Councillor, is part of the management team for the Highfield Community Centre, and is Chair of the Dacorum Communities for Learning. In particular, he has campaigned for many years for more youth facilities in Highfield.
Geoff's record was marked at the Hemel Hempstead Liberal Democrat annual dinner at Bengal Spice on Sunday 8th November. The guest speaker was the elected Mayor of Watford, Dorothy Thornhill. On behalf of the local Liberal Democrats, Dr Richard Grayson, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, presented Geoff with a personal letter of thanks from Party Leader Nick Clegg, and a bottle of whisky from local party members.
"I still hope", said Geoff, "that one day, I will see Dacorum Council and the County Council undo the mess they have made of youth provision in Highfield."
Dr Richard Grayson said:
"Political parties would not exist without the leadership and hard work of people like Geoff Lawrence. He has worked for local people for half a century, unpaid, because he believes in helping wherever he can, and persuading others to do the same. He is a great inspiration to us all."
